Get the Most from Your Kreg Jig

A Kreg Jig® makes it easy for anyone, from the beginner DIYer to the advanced woodworker, to create rock-solid wood projects and to make strong, long-lasting repairs. All you need is a Kreg Jig®, a drill, and a handful of Kreg Screws. You may not know about some of the things your Kreg Jig® can do, though. In this edition of Kreg Plus, we’ll share tips to help you get the most from your Kreg Jig®.

“Which Kreg Jig® is right for me?”

With several models and types to choose from, you may need some help selecting the Kreg Jig® that’s right for you. The overview information below will come in handy. If you prefer, you can download a printable Kreg Jig® comparison chart. You can also compare the options in more detail here.

Kreg Jig R3

Portable Pocket-Hole Powerhouse

The Kreg Jig® R3 is a good choice if you build a few projects each year, or if most of your projects are smaller in scale. Plus, the Kreg Jig® R3 is great to have on hand for making repairs to wood home furnishings. Setting up your Kreg Jig® R3 is incredibly easy, too, so you’ll be creating Kreg Joints in no time. We show you how in just 3 simple steps.

Secure the R3 with a Screw

Secure the R3 with a Screw

In certain, restrictive situations where the use of a clamp is not possible, the Kreg Jig® R3 can be secured in place with a Kreg Screw or common wood screw. All you have to do is drive the screw through the mounting hole on the top of the jig. This is also a good option when using the R3 for repair applications.

The Do-It-All Pocket-Hole Jig

If you build four to five projects a year or more, and you're taking on larger projects, one of our “L-shaped jigs” (the K4 or K5) is perfect for you. With the Kreg Jig® K4, you clamp the piece you are working on into the jig using a fast, simple toggle clamp. Then you use the stepped bit and a drill to create perfectly positioned pocket holes. The Kreg Jig® K4 and K5 produce the same pocket hole as the R3, but speed up the process, so you get more done in less time.

Use Your Drill Guide Block Portably

You might not know that the Drill Guide Block that came included with your Kreg Jig® (K4 or K5) can also be used portably. All you have to do is disengage the quick-release pin (K5) or brass locking pin (K4). Then, pull the Guide upwards, right out of your jig. Now your Drill Guide is ready for portable use.

When using the Drill Guide separately in a repair application, make sure to set the stop collar, and firmly secure the Guide to your workpiece with a Kreg Face Clamp, Bar Clamp, or C-clamp. In situations where using a clamp is not possible, you can screw the Guide directly to your workpieces.

In this video, we share a couple great tips for using your Drill Guide Block portably.

Compact Pocket Holes

Create Compact Pocket Holes

You may be surprised to find that, with optional accessories, your Kreg Jig® can drill multiple sizes of pocket holes. If you’re looking to create more compact, low-profile pocket holes in the same joinery applications, but also tackle smaller projects, thinner stock, and tighter repair applications, check out the Micro-Pocket™ Drill Guide. After removing the standard Drill Guide Block, the Micro will fit inside your K3, K4/K4MS, or K5/K5MS.

Kreg Jig HD

The Heavy-Duty Solution

If you’re regularly working with large stock, the Kreg Jig® HD will deliver the strength you need. Optimized for 2x4s, 1 1/2" thick and thicker stock, the HD is great for framing walls, building deck railings, outdoor furniture, and other large projects. It will also fit inside your K3, K4/K4MS, or K5/K5MS.

Kreg Jig Mini

The Mini’s Unique Feature

The Mini Kreg Jig® is good for applications where the smallest jig possible is required. If you decide to plug your pocket holes with our solid-wood plugs, the Mini’s plug-setting feature offers a great way to do so. The Mini is also great for making household repairs. Learn more in this video.
